Our Experts Can Help You Understand and Measure Stresses
Need to understand and measure stresses accurately? Our Houston stress testing laboratory provides a range of analytical capabilities including ASTM E 837 rosette hole drilling, tube splitting, and more to help you quantitatively evaluate stress in your application.
What is Rosette Hole Drilling for Stress Measurement?
Rosette hole drilling is a method for measuring stress at and below the surface that provides an accurate, quantitative measure of stress at various depths.
Rosette Hole Drilling vs. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) for Stress Measurements
Is hole drilling or XRD better for measuring stress? We get this question a lot, and the answer is: both. In many cases, the shallow depth capability of XRD is a limiting factor. Often the stresses extend (and vary) far beyond the range that XRD can measure. In comparison, hole-drilling measurements can extend far deeper, even going through the entire depth of a part.
There are some ways to extend the depth capability of XRD, such as by ion milling of the surface to remove and test layer by layer. However, these methods are time-consuming and expensive, and may still result in some modification of the stresses from milling process. But in general, the speed and value from hole-drilling is substantially better than XRD and so we tend to use it for all but the shallowest stress measurements.
