ASTM D1141 Substitute Ocean Water Salt – Heavy Metals Version

The complete formulation including trace metal nitrates for research, sensor work, and applications where minor-element chemistry matters.

What you’re getting

This is a pre-blended, dry powder formulation that produces substitute ocean water meeting ASTM D1141-98(2021), Formula A, Table X1.1, with the addition of the heavy metals stock solution components called out in Section X1.2 of the standard. The formulation produces a synthetic seawater that includes not only the major ions (sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate) but also the trace metal nitrates that occur naturally in open-ocean water, including copper, zinc, lead, manganese, iron, aluminum, cobalt, and others.

To prepare: Add 41.953 grams to 1 liter of deionized water, follow the heavy-metals stock addition per Section X1.2 of D1141, adjust pH to 8.2 with dilute NaOH, and you have the complete reference-grade synthetic seawater used in the most demanding marine simulation work. Adjust per the volume you want to make.

The salt is granular and free-flowing. The heavy metals liquid is provided in a ready-to-mix liquid container. Each batch is blended to specification and shipped with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet.

Why the Heavy Metals version matters

Open-ocean water is not just a salt solution. Trace metals at the parts-per-billion level influence corrosion behavior, biofouling, electrochemical response, and biological activity. For most general-purpose corrosion testing, the major-ion Regular formulation is sufficient and is what most ASTM and NACE methods specify. But certain applications require the full chemistry:

Galvanic and electrochemical research where trace species matter. Copper, manganese, and iron at parts-per-billion levels can shift cathodic reaction kinetics and influence open-circuit potential measurements. If your work involves precise polarization curves, mixed-potential analysis, or galvanic series determinations, the trace metals are part of the test environment.

Sensor calibration and oceanographic work. Conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and ion-selective electrode sensors used in oceanographic instrumentation are calibrated against media that match the full ionic profile of natural seawater. Marine biofouling and antifouling coatings testing. Many antifouling formulations work by releasing copper or zinc ions to discourage biological settlement. To test these coatings meaningfully, your background medium needs to start at realistic seawater trace-metal concentrations rather than zero — otherwise you are not measuring antifouling performance, you are measuring metal release rate.

Reference and comparison work. When you need to publish, file with regulators, or compare data against the published literature on natural seawater behavior, the Heavy Metals version is the closest defensible match to actual open-ocean composition.

Specifications that explicitly call for it. Some OEM, defense, and oceanographic specifications reference D1141 with the heavy metals stock included. If your method specifies “D1141 substitute ocean water with heavy metals” or “D1141 Formula A with X1.2 trace metals,” this is the product.

What’s included beyond the Regular formulation

The Heavy Metals edition adds the trace metal nitrates per ASTM D1141 Section X1.2:

Composition

This product produces a solution containing all the major ions of the Regular formulation plus the trace metal nitrates listed above. The major ion composition is identical to the Regular formulation and is summarized on our D1141 reference page.

Preparation instructions

  1. Weigh out 41.953 g of D1141 Heavy Metals salt for each 1 L of substitute ocean water you want to prepare.
  2. Dissolve in deionized or distilled water, stirring continuously. Use roughly 80% of your final volume.
  3. Adjust pH to 8.2 using 0.1 N NaOH (most common) or 0.1 N HCl if needed.
  4. Bring up to final volume with additional deionized water.
  5. Filter or decant any small quantity of insoluble residue if your application requires a clear solution.

For one US gallon (3.785 L), use approximately 158.8 g (about 5.6 oz). Detailed mixing tables for common volumes are available on our D1141 product reference page.

Storage: keep in a sealed container in a cool, dry location away from direct light. The blend is hygroscopic. Properly stored, shelf life is at least 24 months.
